The next time you find yourself wandering around downtown Alhambra, be sure not to bypass Nucleus–especially after performing some not-so-subtle double takes. A watering hole for the art-loving community, this nifty gallery/store features superb merchandise along with sometimes lighthearted, oftentimes catharsis-inducing, but always visually compelling artwork.

Printed on American Apparel shirts are whimsical designs by local artists such as Chris Appelhans (Monster House) and Kazu Kibuishi (Flight, Daisy Kutter). While Nucleus boasts some downright stylin’ bags and wallets for hyper-cynical Angry Little Girls, it is not out of character for them to devote an entire wall to sickeningly adorable toys and figurines (i.e. Wish Come True! and Anna Chambers’s plush collection of sleeping chipmunks).

Nucleus also offers a healthy array of books spanning animation, crafts, fashion, illustration, graphic design (!!!), tattoos (!!!), and urban art. And prints! There are assloads of prints!

As for their second (and primary) function as an art gallery, Nucleus holds monthly exhibits, an annual benefit auction, product signings, DIY workshops, scattered music events, and artist lectures. The opening receptions for the month-long shows are always guaranteed to be happenin’ with music, drinks, prizes and, of course, new art! And if you strategically show up between 3 and 7 on a Monday or a Tuesday, chances are you’ll catch me behind the desk.

Wish Come True!

After quite an eventful day of removing nails and spackling walls in preparation for the next show, I settled down at the register with a graphic design book in hand. It was called Tactile: High Touch Visuals. Graphic design and the third dimension. My eyes had the munchies! So many innovative, fascinating projects. I’ll highlight a few.

Apparently, there is such a thing as professional rock stacking.
Taken in The Annex district, a quaint area with great restaurants, ice cream, local shops and coffee places.
