JFL Review: The SKETCH Show at the Second City. by jaxba

Fast Forward Revue Rating: FFF (3 out of 5)

Craig Robinson aka Daryll from The Office (US) – The ultimate serenading host! WOW. Take your panties off for this talented man on the keyboard… he is naturally hilarious, calls often for audience participation, and is musically inclined. Somehow he is able to figure out any song on his tiny keyboard by listening to it once. Incredibly charming guy.
The Sketchersons – Not my favourite. I felt that it was hard to connect with the number of people in the troupe in such a short time. Some of the acting seemed robotic and scenes were a bit mundane with lots of unoriginal lines and situations. Though, one sketch was quite hilarious with a repeated Sarah Maclachlin song.
The Imponderables – Four guys with amazing chemistry who are inventive and take risks… nothing is inappropriate between them. For real. Check out their YouTube!
The Williamson Playboys – Wonderful! What a delightful musical duo… Doug Morency and Paul Bates. They are like Flight of the Conchords as senior citizens with a ukulele and a tuba. Their songs are a riot and are original to the bone. Their 100% commitment led me to think they WERE over 100 years old (which is what they claim to be).
Keilly & Roeters – Takes a bit of time to adjust to their refreshingly crude humour but it ends up being a great laugh. Their continuous bickering and bizarre banters are so natural… I wondered while I was watching if they were improvising their elaborate threats. They’re on YouTube!

Memorable tune from the Keilly & Roeters act:
Kanye Mahna by Luke Enlow SUPER catchy. A mashup of the Muppets’ infamous doo doooooo doo doo doo mahna mahna and Kanye West’s Gold Digger.

I apologize for the lack of linguistic flow in this review as it is written entirely with dashes, ellipses and colons – with the exception of this se…. god damnit. More Just For Laughs reviews coming!

Toronto Polaroid Tour: AH..AH… AAACHOO!! by jaxba

Taken in the basement of St. Lawrence Market – the perfect area to walk back in time to the mid 1900s (much like The Distillery) or also described as ‘The Montreal’ in Toronto. You’d expect to find an old train station there or a newspaper boy yelling “Extra, Extra!” with a Jack Russell Terrier yelping close behind.

In slightly related news, I just learned there is such thing as ACHOO syndrome, also known as “Achooism” and “Photic sneeze reflex”, where people start sneezing perpetually in sudden exposure to bright light. It’s backronym (an acronym where they start with the abbreviation and make what it stands for) is Autosomal dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst syndrome. By golly, I wonder how long it took them to come up with that!

Sims, Sam Roberts and HellBoy II by jaxba

Maybe I find this music video cool because I’ve had my Sims phases throughout the years. Especially in the beginnings of summer and winter breaks where I spend 3 days straight without sleeping playing in this fantasy world, not realizing it’s morning until the birds are singing. This year, I trekked to the Apple store just to get the Sims 2 Mac version… fully aware the next one is coming out 2009. But of course, the phase passed very quickly and my sleep schedule is back to normal. Somewhat. (Disregarding this post’s time of publication.)
So today, I saw this Sam Roberts video playing on a small TV screen hanging from the ceiling of a movie theatre while waiting to purchase HellBoy II tickets. To be honest, that was the first time I’ve heard of him. Later, I found out he’s Canadian! Sorry, I am probably out of the loop.
Anyway, here is Sam Roberts’ Them Kids from his latest album Love at the End of the World.

Oh and all you folk wondering if HellBoy II: The Golden Army was any good – it was hilariously enjoyable. Although there were many logistic flaws that left me questioning “Why didn’t _____ do _____ and just ____ that guy?” I guess without thinking too much about those, I really liked it. The mythical creatures had awesome designs reminding me of the brilliance that was Pan’s Labyrinth. The action was just the right amount and the cheesiness of the love story was… yea, quite cheesy. But if it makes a difference, it was consciously cheesy. While Guillermo del Toro encapsulates you into this fantastic world, he also allows for so much great humour between the characters. That and the lovable characters themselves (Hellboy, Abe, Liz, Krauss) were the best part of the film and why I’d recommend it. Heck, I didn’t even watch the first HellBoy and I liked it. So there it is, my quarter-assed review on HellBoy II.

FFR Rating: FFF½ (3.5 out of 5)

Apparently, there is such a thing as professional rock stacking.
Taken in The Annex district, a quaint area with great restaurants, ice cream, local shops and coffee places.

Wake up, everyone! by jaxba

.
Jason Mraz’s new official UK music video for his next single ‘Make it Mine’ from his album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. Directed by Jennifer Sheridan and Gille Klabin. I couldn’t help posting it. Love the Canadian geese, his percussionist Toca Rivera’s deadpan, and the overall good vibes I get from it. I’d recommend watching it in high quality on the video’s YouTube page – Enjoy!

Shake both sides of the butt. by jaxba

Gorgeous days lately. To celebrate, I walked around the Toronto Harbourfront centre on Saturday and after watching several street performers juggle flames, crack jokes and ask for money, I heard what I thought was a giant electro-funk disco party. And it was! Several people were already showing their awesome freestyle taco of body movements near the Sirius stage.

So who was responsible for making everyone feel like stayin’ alive?
Tortured Soul(Click for their myspace!)
I recommend: Your Dream Is My Dream and Special Lady from the ‘In Transit’ EP. Special Lady evokes memories of Canned Heat by Jamiroquai.

They’re a Brooklyn based, electronica pop band fueled with so much soul, jazz and psychedelic funk you can’t help but get up and dance and shake that booty in your pants. Reminds me of Jamiroquai blended with some Bill Withers and Jacksoul injected with the sweet beats and topped with a wild synthesizer. Dressed in white shirts and ties were Jason Kriveloff working the bass and harmonies, John-Christian Urich killing on the drums and singing and Ethan White, synthesizer-extraordinaire.

Don’t be fooled by their ill-suited name with emo implications. Sounds nothing like their name. Give it a listen!
